Videojet helps reduce waste for global food and beverage retailer with new colored inks.

Environmentally-friendly inks in Videojet 1000 Line continuous inkjet printers designed to print high-contrast codes and provide excellent adhesion

Chicago, Illinois – June 13, 2016 – In response to customers’ needs to reduce packaging waste and increase productivity, Videojet Technologies Inc., (www.videojet.com/sg) a global leader in coding, marking and printing solutions, has formulated two new environmentally-friendly colored inks for the food and beverage packaging industry.

Global food and beverage retailers regularly face public pressure to reduce their packaging scrap and waste to landfill sites. Research states that containers and packaging alone contribute to over 23% of the material reaching landfill sites in the U.S.; some of these materials are food-related containers and packaging.[i]

“Single-use food and beverage packaging is a large source of landfill waste,” says Heidi Wright, Business Unit Manager, Supplies, at Videojet. “In fact, the new blue and green inks have been specifically designed to help solve a global retailer’s problem with packaging waste, helping to reduce such waste commonly found in landfill sites.”

Recent studies show that 58 billion paper cups are thrown away every year in the United States alone[ii]. Many paper cups are coated with plastic, and therefore cannot be recycled. This puts pressure on global food & beverage retailers to incorporate recycling into their packaging choices[iii]. Videojet has introduced new blue and green colored inks to assist with reducing waste at a global food & beverage retailer. Using colors to differentiate between disposable packaging sizes has helped the well-known fast food establishment eliminate scrap and increase process efficiency by identifying the correct packaging size the first time around.

These new blue and green colored inks are the latest addition to the vast selection of fluids optimized for the Videojet 1000 Line of continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers. The inks have been specifically designed for printing high-contrast codes on light colored surfaces, and are also excellent for printing on untreated polyethylene and polypropylene substrates typically found in the food packaging industry. They also offer excellent adhesion on plastics, metals and coated paperboards, as well as other general purpose substrates including paper, wood, ceramic and glass.

The environmentally-friendly colored inks use an ethanol/ acetone based formulation, making them ideal for high-speed packaging lines that require fast drying time. Their quick-dry properties and exceptional ink adhesion removes ink smudging and helps the code to survive abrasion caused by product-to-product contact, typically found during product stacking or production line transport.

Listening to customers is a key ingredient of our ink innovation process. Formulation of the new blue and green inks is another example of how Videojet focuses on customers’ needs to create the industry’s best ink solutions,” concludes Ms. Wright.

New Videojet 9550 Print & Apply Corner Wrap applicator increases throughput for two-sided case labeling requirements

New applicator can replace two conventional applicators while eliminating mechanisms that frequently cause operational problems

Chicago, Illinois ‒ May 11, 2016 ‒ Videojet has announced its new Corner Wrap applicator for its highly successful 9550 Print & Apply Labeling system – www.videojet.com/9550. This applicator option provides substantial improvements in production throughput for applications that require labeling on two sides of the case so it can be seen from multiple orientations. “The 9550 Corner Wrap system prints the information on one continuous label and in a single process applies it to the two adjacent panels of a case, replacing two conventional applicators while ensuring that the information on both sides of the package is synched,” says Bob Neagle, business unit manager for Videojet.  “The new applicator also follows in the path of previous 9550 series applicators by eliminating most of the causes of failures, adjustments and maintenance in conventional applicators.”

The conventional approach to two-sided labeling uses two labelers to apply two different labels with duplicate information. These label printer applicator (LPA) machines use either blow applicators or telescopic tamp applicators to apply printed labels to packs. Both of these methods rely on the accurate and timely placement of the label from the print engine onto an applicator pad. When this mechanical process fails, the result is missing or wrinkled labels and sometimes damage to equipment. For example, a mis-timed tamp applicator stroke can result in a collision with an advancing pack and can damage the applicator.

Conversely, the 9550 Corner Wrap system uses Videojet patented Direct Apply™ labeling technology to affix the side section of a label.  Next, a single pneumatic stroke of a wipe roller wraps the label onto the back of the case.  This simple design eliminates the swing arm that is typically used for corner wrap labeling and can often be a point of failure. Additionally, the 9550 method reduces wear and tear, as its applicator rolls across the back of the case as opposed to the front of the case where the case can directly impact the applicator arm.

Manual adjustments are frequently required in conventional LPA systems, and when these sensitive adjustments are not made correctly, the result can include label, web and ribbon jams and mechanical failures, all of which can result in downtime that brings the line to a halt, reducing production throughput. The Videojet 9550 Corner Wrap system overcomes these problems by using Videojet patented Intelligent Motion™ technology to maintain the correct amount of tension in the media supply reel from the first label to the last. This design eliminates the need for manual adjustments and numerous moving parts which have a tendency to fail and require maintenance, while at the same time helping to eliminate jams. The result is a reduction in downtime which helps increase production throughput.

The trend toward increasing retailer and regulatory requirements, as well as increasing SKU complexity, is a concern for manufacturers seeking to safeguard their operations from costly labeling errors.  In order to help manufacturers improve quality and adhere to applicable standards, the 9550 Corner Wrap system comes equipped with the Videojet industry-leading CLARiTY® touch screen interface, which includes intuitive job selection, comprehensive feedback and diagnostics to minimize human error.

A single, integrated user interface removes the difficulties associated with dual interfaces common on systems based on OEM print engines. As few as three user touches are needed to select a job from an on-board job database. A step-by-step guided entry allows correct fields to be edited and bar codes to be created automatically by linking data from multiple text fields.  Additionally, a preview of the job selection and the final message is available for additional confidence that the correct job is programmed.

Videojet launches new solvent ink with enhanced adhesion on non-porous consumer packaged goods

Videojet ink experts develop solvent ink for TIJ printers, designed to deliver high-resolution text, logos and bar codes on non-porous materials

Chicago, Illinois – 28 September, 2016 – The global flexible packaging market is rapidly growing, and its value is predicted at US$248 billion by 2020 due to rising demands in consumer convenience.i As more consumers lead increasingly busy lifestyles, demand for convenience products in the healthcare, personal care, food & beverage, and pharmaceuticals market is ever increasing.

The growth in flexible packaging popularity is linked to a number of factors, including its resilience to damage and the range of packaging design options available.ii Flexible packaging is also the most economical method to package, preserve and distribute consumer goods, as it can be designed to fit the product and end-user requirements due to its ability to be made into a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Advances in printing technology also mean that different finishes can be applied to the packaging to help enhance the product’s appearance. Glossy substrates and flexible films are common materials used in flexible packaging. These materials are non-porous, and without inks that perform well on these substrates, customers may experience text, logos or barcodes being rubbed or scratched off after printing.

In response to customers’ needs for enhanced ink adhesion on non-porous packaging in the food, consumer and pharmaceutical packaging markets, Videojet Technologies, a leader in coding and marking solutions, has launched the new Flex Solvent ink for their Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) range of printers.

Heidi Wright, Business Unit Manager, Supplies, at Videojet explains “This ink has been specifically formulated to improve adhesion on several consumer packaging substrates, particularly materials common in glossy packaging or flexible films. The new Flex Solvent ink opens up new opportunities to mark more durable codes on substrates that were previously difficult to mark, such as bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP).”

Dry time on these materials if often between 1 and 2 seconds, and is suitable for printer integration in to web production processes. The ink is also an option for where customers require absence of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), such as in the food and beverage markets.

Wright concludes, “Extensive tests were performed on a number of substrates to verify enhanced adhesion and faster dry times. Videojet continues to invest in Ink Research and Development, and we are very pleased that this new formula has unlocked ways to help our customers print on a wider range of materials.”

The Flex Solvent ink can be used in the current Wolke (www.wolke.com) by Videojet range of TIJ printers, including the 8510, m600 touch, m600 advanced and m600 oem printer models. The inherent simplicity, uptime and print resolution of TIJ, combined with the simple usability of the Videojet and Wolke controllers, make these printers ideal for a range of packaging applications.

Videojet boosts productivity and efficiency with new CO2 Laser Range

Flexible, high-performance CO2 laser solutions deliver more speed, more coverage and superior print quality for manufacturers

Wood Dale, Illinois – November 29, 2016 – As production targets increase, manufacturers need more efficient laser marking solutions to print consistent high-quality codes on their products. However, these demands are stretching the capabilities of current laser coding equipment. Until now, low power laser markers have not been available at high enough speeds to code products faster. Wide web applications are becoming more common, and data processing is becoming more challenging as code content becomes more complex. The net effect is that the desire for greater productivity is often inhibited by the limits of the marking solution.

In response to manufacturers’ needs for higher quality codes, Videojet Technologies, a global leader in coding, marking and printing solutions, has advanced its range of CO2 laser marking systems with the introduction of the Videojet 3340 and 3140 laser marking systems. This advanced CO2 laser range is designed to help deliver peak coding performance for mainstream applications, as well as a solution for manufacturers that require faster data processing speeds, high speed coding up to 900m/min and large marking fields across a wide web application.

Recognizing that high-quality codes are important for manufacturers, the new Videojet laser solutions offer speed improvements in data processing and communication over its predecessor lasers. This improvement provides benefits for a range of applications from food and beverage, to pharmaceutical and tobacco by providing more time to engage the product, more time to finish the required mark, and ultimately producing higher quality codes.

Marking speed enhancements of the new Videojet 3340 laser marking system are highly impressive, and manufacturers can now mark four lines of variable data, plus 2D codes at 400+ products per minute. With mark speeds of up to 2,000 characters per second, the Videojet 3340 offers the equivalent in speed and capability of one of the leading 60W lasers on the market today. This has significant cost, space and power advantages for manufacturers, integrators and other machine builders.

We know that market trends are changing, and customers have to increase productivity by coding more products faster,” said Sascha Ammesdoerfer, Laser Business Unit Manager at Videojet Technologies. “The improved speed and coverage capabilities of our advanced CO2 laser solutions mean they can now mark up to 900m/min, marking more text at higher speeds for companies that require 2D codes and text.”

These advanced CO2 laser solutions offer the largest marking field in the industry and are 20% wider than the closest equivalent on the market today. The Videojet 3340 can now cover up to 600mm marking field width, allowing certain wide web applications to be addressed with one laser that previously would have required two lasers. The large marking window helps to increase throughput and productivity.

The available configurations give Videojet the flexibility to match the physical integration needs of the specific packaging line, and the mark window options help ensure we can deliver the marking performance our customers need,” explains Ammesdoerfer. “With three available wavelengths, the new Videojet CO2 lasers can mark on a range of substrates including PET bottling, plastic labels, laminated cartons, and a host of plastic materials common in consumer packaging.”

Complementing the 3340 and 3140 laser marking systems, Videojet also offers a range of fume extraction systems and filter options that can be tailored for the given application, helping to remove smoke and particulate debris and improving uptime by keeping the laser lens clean.  Specifying the right laser solution supports easy integration, speeding up the installation and changeover process and ultimately increasing uptime. In addition to this, the detachable umbilical cable can be easily routed during set-up, helping to eliminate the need to move other machinery.

The Videojet 3340 and 3140 laser marking systems offer the flexibility needed to deliver peak performance in a variety of challenging production environments,” said Ammesdoerfer. “The vast range of standard configurations, our substrate flexibility, and the high-resolution marking heads all combine to deliver the marking performance customers need to help them achieve their production goals.”

The Videojet 3340 and 3140 laser marking systems are one of a number of innovative new laser products being launched by Videojet in 2016.

Videojet introduces new UV fluorescing ink for its 8610 Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) printer

Videojet ink experts develop clear, UV fluorescing ink designed to print ‘invisible’ codes that can only be seen under black light

Wood Dale, Illinois – January 12, 2017 – Packages, bottles and certain products may require discrete codes and brand information that can be tracked through the supply chain. Fluorescing UV ink is only visible under UV lighting, and can be an unobtrusive solution for markets that require product traceability.

With over 40 years of ink development experience, Videojet Technologies Inc., a global leader in coding, marking and printing solutions, has launched an innovative new UV fluorescing ink designed to deliver crisp codes for high end cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other consumer goods.

The new ink is colorless in normal light and fluoresces blue under a black light. With its MEK solvent base, the ink offers very good adhesion to a variety of substrates including coated cartons or glossy labels, vial caps and closures, and dark substrates where a bar code is needed.

Heidi Wright, Business Unit Manager, TIJ & TTO, at Videojet explains “This ink was initially developed for the pharmaceutical market; however, it is also suited to a variety of other applications including retort processed food containers and cosmetic packaging.”

The clear, UV fluorescing ink is ideal for GS1-DataMatrix and other 2D codes, and is resistant to the autoclave process. This ink offers a 2-3 second dry time on non-porous materials such as ABS, HDPE, PET, PVC and nylon, and delivers great adhesion versatility on a wide range of substrates.

This ink is for use in the Videojet 8610 TIJ printer (http://www.videojet.com/8610) which utilizes a revolutionary, purpose-built cartridge designed to use MEK fluids. The 8610 TIJ printer is ideal for applications that require crisp, repeatable codes on to foils, films, plastics and coated stocks, and provides print resolutions up to four times greater than continuous inkjet (CIJ).
